Summer lovin’ cocktails for chocaholics

Think hot chocolates are just for cosying up in winter? Add a little vodka, serve in a chilled glass and you’ve got yourself a suave summer cocktail to sip on.  

CHILLED HOT CHOCOLATE MARTINI

What you’ll need:

85g hot chocolate

30ml vodka

15ml dark crème de cacao

15ml Irish cream

Dash vanilla extract

Whipped cream to garnish

Chocolate shavings to garnish

Chocolate syrup to garnish

How to make:

  1. Garnish the inside of a cocktail glass with chocolate syrup and chill the glass.
  2. In a cocktail shaker with ice, shake the hot chocolate, vodka, dark crème de cacao, Irish cream and vanilla extract.
  3. Strain the contents of the shaker into the prepared cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with whipped cream and chocolate shavings enjoy.

CHOCOLATE ORANGE COCKTAIL

Add a little zest and zing to your summer cocktails with this simple yet delectable chocolate cocktail with an orange twist.

What you’ll need:

40ml dark rum

20ml Cointreau

2 small scoops of ice cream

3 tablespoons coconut milk

1 tablespoon orange juice

1 teaspoon of cocoa powder

1 orange

a pinch of cinnamon

How to make:

  1. Place some cocoa powder on a plate and set aside.
  2. Wash the orange, grate half of the peel and then squeeze it.
  3. With a slice of orange, wet the rim of a Martini glass, turn it down and rotate on the plate where you put some cocoa powder.
  4. Put all ingredients in a shaker without ice, shake for 20 seconds, then pour in the Martini glass.
  5. Garnish with more cocoa and orange peel.
  6. To make the cocktails creamy pull-out ice cream a few minutes before preparing the drinks.

SPIKED RED VELVET

Always on top tier of the cupcake stand, this cocktail is a trifecta of deliciousness: chocolate, cupcakes and cocktails. 

What you’ll need:

1 Cup milk

1/3 Cup Red Wine

60 g chocolate

½ tsp vanilla

½ tsp red food colouring

pinch of salt

Whipped cream (optional)

red velvet cupcake (optional)

How to make:

  1. In a small saucepan, heat milk over medium-high heat until hot and steaming but not boiling.
  2. Reduce heat to low and whisk in wine, salt and chocolate until melted and warm, stirring constantly so that the chocolate doesn’t burn. 
  3. Remove from the heat and whisk in vanilla extract and red food colouring. Refrigerate until cooled. 
  4. Pour into a glass and top with a dollop of whipped cream or pipe it on for a more delicate swirl. Sprinkle with red velvet cake crumbs, voila!
